West Cornwall Hospital

Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust was established in 1992. It is an Acute Services Trust with 3,240 staff, including 1,140 nurses.

The Trust provides services to 500,00 people spread across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. The county also has a high number of visitors as it is one of the UK's top tourist destinations. Each year some 3.5 million people visit the county's dramatic moorland areas and beautiful coastlines.

The county's healthcare facilities have benefited from being in a European Union Objective 1 funding area, resulting in modern hospitals geared to providing healthcare in the 21st century.

With a population spread across a largely rural community the county is already making good use of the latest advances in tele-medicine. Developments in the near future include the establishment of the Peninsular Medical School, and the piloting of a new system for electronic patient records.

West Cornwall Hospital is a small general hospital in an area of outstanding natural beauty. It has approximately 100 beds for acute medical and surgical cases, plus 4 High Dependency beds. Several services including gynaecology, urology day cases surgery, and extra renal dialysis sessions have already been introduced this year. An enlarged Day Case Unit will enable full utilisation of the Theatres, which together with additional out-patients facilities, creates an opportunity for greater numbers of patients to be treated locally. In addition it will be possible to provide a wider range ofendoscopy as well as the further expansion of Dermatology.
